What is a granite farm an where are they located?
A granite farm is a large warehouse where many slabs are available to see and be selected. Most of the farms we use are in the Minneapolis, Mn area.
What happens once I get to the granite farm?
They will ask you who your fabricator is (Trend Stone) and then give you a sheet of paper to keep track of what you like. Make sure if you fall in love with one, to hold it, so no one else can have it. We will provide you with a price list cheat sheet. The farms will not provide you with any prices. Once you select your stone, they will send us a hold sheet and I will be calling you to find out if that is the one you are for sure going with.
All Granite Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between granite and quartz?
Quartz countertops are man-made engineered stone countertops formed by combining 90% ground quartz (a natural hard mineral) with 8-10% resins, polymers, and pigments. This forms a very hard granite-like surface. The appearance depends on how the quartz is
ground: coarsely ground quartz produces a flecked appearance, while finely ground quartz produces a smooth look.
We install both products. I always say go with the product you love the looks of.
Quartz is generally more consistent in color and movement. Granite is a one of a kind material. There are slight advantages to both products, but in the end, they are both extremely durable. They will both look beautiful and outlast any product out there.
Why isn’t there granite samples?
Granite is like diamonds, each slab is unique to itself, therefore if we gave you a sample of a piece it would not be what actually goes in your home. We suggest you hand select your slab at one of the granite farms we use.
I heard that you have to seal granite, what does that entail?
When granite comes out of the earth, it is not sealed. Before it goes in your house it will be sealed. The sealer does not go away on its own, but if acidic products are use and left on the granite, the sealer may get eaten. We recommend to seal your granite every 3-5 years. It will take about 10 min and is as easy as washing your countertops. If you sprinkle water on your granite and it beads up you are sealed, if it does not bead up, you need to put sealer down.
Do granite or quartz stain?
They both can stain, but in general it is not easy to stain them. Like any other product, if you leave something on the tops long enough, they can stain.
What is more durable?
You can cut and put hot pans on Granite. We do not suggest you do that with quartz. In general, they are the same as far as durability.
What is Resin?
Resin is an apoxy that is used to fill the natural fissures in granite.
